The US Has a Thing for Cuba

So, the US is still plottin on Cuba:
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. embargo on Cuba will remain in place despite Fidel Castro's announcement that he's resigning as Cuba's leader, Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte said Tuesday.

Asked whether Castro's resignation would change U.S. policy, Negroponte said, "I can't imagine that happening any time soon."

President Bush said the move should spark "a democratic transition" for the communist island nation.

"The international community should work with the Cuban people to begin to build institutions that are necessary for democracy and eventually this transition ought to lead to free and fair elections," Bush said at a news conference in Rwanda during his five-nation tour of Africa.

"I believe that the change from Fidel Castro ought to begin ... a democratic transition," he said. "The United States will help the people of Cuba realize the blessings of liberty." Video Watch Bush react to Castro's decision »

Castro said he was stepping down Tuesday as president of Cuba and commander in chief of its military, according to a letter published in the country's state-run newspaper, Granma.

The United States and Cuba, which have no formal diplomatic relations, have been at odds for decades, but tensions between the two countries have increased in the past two years.

You know, to me, in this case "democracy" simply means, we get to have access to your island, hem up all your workers in factories that pay low wages but get our economy poppin, and can start the process of mind fuckin folks into thinking that Cuban is less than American. Just my thoughts. I'm not saying it isn't necessarily a good thing that Castro oned himself but you know how the US do! They be

That's real talk. Pre-Castro Cuba was a US-friendly government that was a den for American gangsters like Meyer Lansky. Certainly, it's far from perfect, but education for one thing has definitely improved. Castro gave political asylum to sister Assata, which I'm grateful for.
Also, Cuba has been transitioning into a market economy slowly but surely; these things take time. For a state to be part of free trade without first training its people is simply an invitation for said citizens to be exploited. The US knows this and that is why she wants Cuba to hurry the transition. With the world shitting on the American economy, American businesses want to find someone to do the same to.
